General Information

General Information below to assist with answering many of your questions

Portal

On initial enrolment into a class at Stitchery & Co., a welcome to our booking portal, via the Class Manager platform, will be emailed to you.  Your enrolment, date(s) and times of your class, and opportunity to enrol into other classes as they are scheduled, are available to be viewed via the portal.  Stitchery & Co. are committed to tightly managing the digital privacy of our clients.  The only data we require to set up your account on Class Manager is your email and mobile phone number.  Regretfully, the Class Manager platform also requires a birth date; to overcome this, all birth dates are entered as 1/1/01 – please do not amend this as it triggers functionality that Stitchery & Co. will not be using.

Once you have received the invitation to the Class Manager portal, use the link to amend the password to a password of your choice through the ‘Forgot your password’ function.

Location

All classes are conducted at our Melba Hall studio, located at 25 Exeter Road, Croydon North

Booking confirmation

This booking is for a single individual only. It is not intended for multiple people to attend under a single booking due to space restrictions.

Start Time

Please note the start time for your class; it is imperative that participants arrive on time.  Late arrivals will disrupt other participants and will make it difficult for you to follow the material.

Some classes commence with an Induction session; it is compulsory for all participants to attend this component of the class as it forms the basis on which the remainder of the class is delivered.  A late arrival or missing the Induction session will result in forfeiting the entire block of classes.

Our studio schedule is busy; cleaning and set up of spaces occurs in the tight time frame between and prior to classes and we do require the studio spaces to be empty for this to occur.  We ask that arrivals be no earlier than 5 minutes prior to the commencement of class.

Requirements

Stitchery & Co.’s Terms & Conditions describes the guidelines we ask all participants to observe to ensure everyone can safely and joyfully design, stitch and create. Our T&Cs can be located in the portal.  Please be sure to particularly note our policies regarding footwear, long hair, food and drink;

  • Fully covered, closed toe shoes are required in the studio – participants without these will not be permitted to enter the studio
  • Food is not permitted in the studio
  • Drinks must be in a closed container – no glass
  • Long hair must be tied back

Glasses

Sewing involves small stitches, threading a needle and other fine work.  If you require glasses for reading, you will require glasses for sewing; please be sure to bring these to class.

Purchases during class time

Payment for purchases made during class time may be paid for at the conclusion of class, however, if the studio is busy, an invoice will be emailed to you.  Please keep an eye out for invoices; purchases from our retail area are invoiced from our Square platform and our payment terms require these to be paid within 24 hours.  Stitchery & Co. is a 100% privately owned family business and self funded; your timely payment is gratefully appreciated.

Cancellations / missed classes

Stitchery & Co. is 100% privately owned and self funded. Please be sure to familiarise yourself with our Cancellation terms to learn how we balance value for your money whilst ensuring our Hosts are remunerated for their time, when a class is missed, as the busy Stitchery & Co. schedule does not allow for make-up classes.  Our Cancellation Policy can be located in our Terms & Conditions; a quick reference table can be located on the noticeboard in the portal and a full copy of the T&Cs can also be located via the portal.

Stitchery & Co. events may be subject to minimum enrolment numbers.  Notice of 36 hours will be provided if the class is to be cancelled due to insufficient enrolments and a full refund applies.

Illness

Stitchery & Co. is a collective of small business owners who are all mums. We are very keen to impress on all our participants to avoid attending class if at all unwell or tired.  Sewing does involve the use of electric equipment and tools with sharp parts; participants must be sharp and alert to avoid injuring themselves and others around them.  We also appreciate all efforts to maintain the studio as a joyful, sick-free zone; illness spread to our Hosts does result in cancelled classes and we seek to avoid such disappointment.

Parking

Parking is available along Exeter Road and Karingal Street.  There are no parking restrictions along the Exeter Road shopping strip, Monday to Saturday, from 5pm.  Parking on Sundays is available along the Exeter Road shop front without time restrictions.

Lunch

For full day classes and workshops, the Croydon North Bakery, located just a couple of doors down from the studio, are generally open 7 days a week for a fresh lunch option.

Regular weekly class re-enrolment

Our regular weekly group classes are of an ongoing nature, where current enrollees are given priority to re-enrol and continue with their projects.  Vacant positions are determined about 3 weeks prior to an Induction session and are advertised at that time via our Melba Hall noticeboard and website.  Inductions are run twice per term.

Booking invoices for ongoing classes are emailed out via the Class Manager platform and payment in full, 14 days prior to the first class, is required to confirm a re-enrolment. We prefer payment in cash or bank transfer, but also accept card payments online.

Fabric

Fabric requirements are additional to the cost of most of our classes and workshops.  The Stitchery & Co. Melba Hall studio encompasses a retail area and we offer a selection of quality fabrics, haberdashery, tools and equipment.  Participants are very welcome to purchase from us or source their project requirements from elsewhere.  Our retail area is open to the public at times that tie in with most classes and you are welcome to make purchases at any time that it is open.

We encourage you to discuss fabric requirements with your Host prior to your class to ensure your selection is appropriate for your project.

Sewing machines

Participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machine to most of our classes and workshops; we do require that it has been serviced in the past twelve months and/or used in the past three months to ensure it is in working order and safe to operate; it must have an Australian plug and must meet our minimum size requirements (toy machines and mini machines such as the Singer Start, Singer Promise, Semco Indigo and Elna Mini are not acceptable).  If you are planning to use your own machine, please note it may be required in the first class and remember to bring the manual, foot pedal, power cord, the all-purpose foot, bobbins and needles (universal size 80/12 will be suitable for most projects).  We recommend that needles are changed around every 8 hours of sewing.

Participants are also welcome to hire sewing machines in the studio – these can be hired for $6 / person / 2 hour class.  We offer Elna Elina 40 and Janome DC3200 sewing machines for hire in our classes.  These machines have been selected for their suitability for learning, for all ages, as they include a function which caps the speed the machine operates at.  Both machines are easy to use and feature needle down/up functionality, they’re light in weight making them ideal for transporting and both are suitable for use through to intermediate levels of sewing.  With a rigid die cast aluminium frame, the Janome DC3200 is also durable.  At a price point that is suitable for entry level sewing enthusiasts, and renowned as a household brand, Stitchery & Co. is a Janome dealer and we encourage participants in our classes to try out a machine for those seeking assistance with purchasing a sewing machine.

Reservation of a sewing machine for hire in class is confirmed by payment of a machine booking invoice prior to the class.

Sewing kit

Participants are welcome to bring their own sewing kit to the regular weekly classes; these should contain fabric scissors, thread snips, seam ripper, tape measure, fabric marker (ceramic or chalk are preferable), sewing pins and hand sewing needles.  All of these should be sharp, knick and abrasion free; good quality and age appropriate to prevent accidents.  There is equipment available to be loaned during classes if a tool is forgotten.  Beginner class tool kits and individual items are available to be purchased from our retail section.

We encourage you to discuss purchases of sewing kit items with your Host prior to your class to ensure your selection is appropriate for your project.

Studio storage

Due to space restrictions, we are unable to offer studio storage.

Attire for class

We recommend you wear casual attire to sewing classes for comfort.  Please note the requirement for fully covered, closed toe shoes in the studio – participants without these will not be permitted to enter the studio.  We also recommend avoiding wearing knitted garments, as pins tend to lodge themselves in the open structure of knits and become a safety hazard.

Personal mobile devices

We ask that participants are respectful and courteous during class.  Please turn mobile phones to silent mode and store securely out of sight to minimise distractions and facilitate a beneficial learning environment.  We also ask that you leave headsets, headphones and earpieces at home or in your bag for safety reasons.
